At the heart of this series is the longing for a place to breathe.
Refuge is about creating inner space—when the world feels too loud, too fast, too much. With a nod to the chaos, these pieces are quiet invitations to return to a centered place within ourselves.
I began this series during a time when everything felt like it was pressing in—digitally, emotionally, existentially. I was searching for space. Refuge became a way to build it—through stillness, shape, and story.
Each piece begins with a photograph from a vast or humbling natural environment. I then layer in hand-painted shapes, and sometimes gold leaf or mirror—cut and assembled onto wood.
The process is both physical and symbolic. Each layer represents the shifting textures of our inner world—moments of clarity, chaos, peace.
These pieces change as you move around them, catching light from different angles, offering something new each time. My hope is that they create a pause, a breath—a place to land when the world feels like too much. Refuge isn’t about escape. It’s about return.
